Sliding Shelf

A wooden board is fixed on the wall and supports a number of boxes. They can be hanged, removed, slid freely, always changing the layout of the shelves. The back of the boxes are constructed in such a way that they compose with the board a plane surface combining different colours and materials.

Pink & Grey girl's bedrooms a la BODIE and FOU

At the beginning of March, I wrote how I didn't like pink for little girls' bedrooms but pink for grown-ups was ok.....
WELL....as I'm a very reflective person....I mean 'eventually' I'm a reflective person - because really, my first call of action is to do/write things first and then eventually think about it afterwards, rather than my other half who thinks everything first and then acts/decides upon his hours of reflection (I think his way is a bit boring if you ask me :-)

So a few weeks ago, I explained that pink in girl's bedroom was my pet hate. Well it's not exactly true!
The whole Princess/Barbie themed is my pet hate. With all the cheap, flimsy plastic things that come with Barbie and her mates, this makes me feel physically sick but pink and grey, like Bonpoint plays it beautifully in their shops is a different story.

In fact, I think if you mix soft hues of pink like this beautiful Penguin wallpaper in plum (which in fact is not really plum, more like a pale pink with a drop of blueberry), or this adorable Miss Doudou poster in hues of soft pink & yellow and add touches of grey with this Ball chair, then PINK & GREY are the definitive colours to use to create a beautiful and modern pink look for your girl's bedroom be she 4 or 14 years-old!

So here my suggestions for a cool, modern pink look version BODIE and FOU
And so you know...."Pink, pink you stink!" is something our Daughter Mila keeps saying even if it is her favourite colour !

Interview with....ISAK

This morning, we had a couple of customers respectively ordering 7 rolls of Penguin wallpaper in silver and two of the Penguin wallpaper in turquoise (we can feel Spring DIY coming!) which reminded me that before going on holidays, Sandra, Co-Founder and Head of Design at ISAK, kindly sent us back answers and photos to finalise the BODIE and FOU interview.

So let me introduce you to Sandra Isaksson who was brought up by a family of trolls in the heart of a Swedish forest. Her summers were spent sculpting clouds and painting rainbows. In the winters she carved with wind and whittled snowflakes from Skybears.
Her family found her pretty and plump and blueberry kissed but as she grew up she became terribly unruly. They found it necessary to send her out into the real world where she met a handsome fighter pilot prince.

Fastforward to 2010, Sandra now lives in rural England with her Prince Nick and two sons: Theo and Eden (nice name).
She is not only a successful illustrator (proof that growing up with Trolls did the world of good to her) who does freelance work for other companies but also the co-Founder with Prince Nick of ISAK, a company that manufactures and sells beautiful design-gifts and co-ordinated home accessories, all products ethically.
At B&F, we've always been huge fans of her Penguin wallpapers which of course, look perfect in a nursery but Sandra's Scandi style make them suitable for use in a hallway, kitchen or to create a feature like this French stylist did it in her home.

Here is an insight on how Sandra's started and what keeps her going...
I always find interesting to know how people became designers or started their business...something I think Betsy Benn, who recently launched her first two designs with us will love to hear about.

bodie and fou: When did you decide you wanted to be a designer?

Isak: I was 13 when I decided I wanted to be a graphic designer and I guess some time at Uni I realised that I wanted to do more product design as well.

bodie and fou: Where do you find inspiration for your work?

Isak: Everywhere

bodie and fou: Describe your studio/workplace?

Isak: We did a loft conversion and I now have the biggest and brightest room in the house to work from. With small children it’s convenient to be able to work from home. It’s got white walls and wooden floors.

bodie and fou: Which aspect of your work gives you the most pleasure?

Isak: I really enjoy creating new designs and new products and when people fall in love with them – that’s is incredibly rewarding.

bodie and fou: Launching your design studio/company was.....?

Isak: Exhilarating and completely necessary!

bodie and fou: Best piece of advice you were given?

Isak:
I never had anyone to ask for advice. I just did it because I had to do it.

bodie and fou: When did you get your 'lucky break' ?

Isak: Oh, I don’t think Iv’e had it yet!

bodie and fou:
How often do you end up with a finished product that you don’t want your name attached to?

Isak: It happens but not very often. Within Isak it doesn’t happen because we are in control pretty much all the way from start to finish but when I license art work out to other companies that’s when things can go wrong. It’s important to have a very strict licensing contract that explains what the company are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do.

bodie and fou: Who is your favourite designer?

Isak: Don’t think I have one… There are many products that are my favourite products but a specific designer as such, no. And that changes as well.

bodie and fou: What is your favourite piece of design?

Isak: Well, I love the Arne Jacobsen chairs – but I don’t have any, Eames and so many other Danish furniture designs… My favourite pieces of what I do have are bowls by Merete Rasmussen and some beautiful sculptures from her as well.

bodie and fou: What advice would you give to aspiring designers?

Isak: Don’t give up. Believe in yourselves

bodie and fou: What would your dream project be?

Isak: I would love to design stamps! And to do more freelance work for big home accessories companies.

bodie and fou: How do you achieve a good work/life balance?

Isak: Extremely difficult! When you work from home your work is never turned off, it’s always there and you never get a break from it. Home life is muddled up with work life and there are no weekends… But that’s the price you have to pay when you try to do everything! :-)

bodie and fou: Your most precious belongings at home?

Isak: Apart from the children it would be the computer!

bodie and fou: How would you describe your style at home?

Isak: Scandinavian

bodie and fou: If your studio wasn't, describe your ultimate dream workspace?

Isak: A huge top floor of a building, wooden floors, great views, huge windows and white walls. With a modern kitchen, a small library, a coffee machine and lots of design classic furniture.

bodie and fou: Can you cook and what's your signature dish?

Isak: I love cooking and my favourites to both cook and eat at the moment is probably salmon cheviché and slow cooked harissa lamb.

bodie and fou: Name something you can't resist...

Isak: Food (I so know the feeling!)

bodie and fou: What is next on your design journey?

Isak: Well, we’re embarking on a new bedding range for Isak and working on adding to the range and improving the range. But before that we’re actually going to Guatemala to source some coffee…

bodie and fou: And the mantra that keeps you going.......?

Isak: There’s no mantra… more fire in the belly. Or hunger. For more.

Une fille, un sac.....La Tropezienne tote bag

Yesterday, we had a bit of fun shooting our gorgeous French intern Marion who after two months with us, is now leaving at the end of this week to go back studying.
Ahh Marion.....adorable, efficient, helpful, legs to die for, a fabulous sense of style that got me thinking 3 times a week ...'ummm I like that!'
I'm talking fur (fake of course) sleeveless jacket on top of a stylish black blazer, jeans shorts paired with biker boots...White romantic top on skinny jeans....
Marion rocked the 'rock chick look' big time. Coming over for a 2-month internship with us, she brought no less than 4 handbags in her luggage (and she will go back with a gift from us that will make it 5) so of course, it was pretty obvious that she would be the perfect girl to model the black version of La Tropezienne tote bag.

And as I was looking at all the shots and this gorgeous black La Trop unpacked, I was wondering if it would be really indecent to treat myself with the same bag in a different colour....

And I have decided that NO, it wouldn't :-). While I'm trying to catch up with Marion on my bags collection, I would like to thank her warmly for all her help and hard work during her two months with us. It has been a real pleasure and she is welcomed back anytime

Quintessentially British.....

So this week, I'm not sure if you noticed but we added three super cute prints for children from Kayatine and two prints from a new designer Betsy Benn and her Quintessentially print below is already selling like mad...

Yesterday I went to a 2 hours meeting and by the time I came back, I was told we had no stock left! How cool is this?
I love this print dearly because unlike all the Union Jack designs you see everywhere, this one has a lot of amazing little creative details that make it very special....
First it's a celebration of 240 things quintessentially British.....The Queen, The Times Crosswords, fish & chips, Marmite (errkk), MG sport car (my dream car!), red phone box, black cab, Big Ben, Cadbury....I mean you name it, it's there and I can see how this print is going to be a great talking point when we have friends around!

Betsy, the Designer was inspired by her mum's friend who could drink 15 cups of tea a day as long as it was in a proper bone china cup & saucer :-)
It's a very British thing to care so much about tea but I'm with her on this. I hate coffee (yeah I know I'm French and I don't cook either AND I gave up smoking ..... not that I ever smoked Gitanes!).
I also loved the fact that she added a Mum's recipe for the Victoria Sponge and the purists will also be delighted to know that this gorgeous Quintessentially print has been printed using the exact pantones used on the Union Jack flag.
And the way this gorgeous print came to our shop was quite cool too.....
Betsy was the winner last month on the Living Etc Forum where people can show how creative they have been. Then she got interviewed by a local newspaper where she said that she would love to have her work available at two of her favourite shops (one of them being BODIE and FOU) and without a real masterplan in mind, Betsy contacted us to see if we would be interested.
Of course, as soon as I saw her work, I loved it especially the Quintessentially print and the Nelly print which is the print I have been looking for for ages to put in Mila's bedroom....
I really love it and if you read this, you will understand why pink in kids room does not do it for me but the Nelly print will be just perfect next to the grey Farrow & Ball feature wall I did in Mila's bedroom.

Imke Klee.....forever and ever

Imke's photos are always making me feel calm....
I discovered her last year when I came across this beautiful shot called 'Jeune Fille Rural' below and since then have been hooked on her photographic style and stylism.

She still works for Trend Queen Li Edelkoort and her shots get really featured in Trend Union which is a collection of seasonal trend books.
I would love to work with her one day....

Morabito's inspired mood board

Last week I promised I would put together a Morabito - inspired mood board so here it is...
Achieving her simple, timeless, inspiring style is not just a matter of painting a room in white and adding a few white accessories.
Bearing in mind also that not everyone is married to an artist like her late husband and Architect Yves Bayard was, it also a bit more challenging to achieve the Morabito look if you do not live in a contemporary home with concrete floors, superb volumes, high ceilings and natural light.
However challenging it is, this is not impossible if you have at least wooden floorboards (and maybe if we really really want to stretch it....laminate flooring..argh..just writing 'laminate flooring' makes me cringe).
Ok let's run with it because I'm aware that a lot of property developers didn't refurbish their investments with Morabito's style in mind.
So of course the first thing to do is to paint all the walls in white which will not only create a blank canvas but will bring a beautiful, natural light to the room (very good if you suffer from SAD like me).
However, favour a white paint which will give some kind of texture or luminosity to the room. The Pure Brilliant White By Dulux is super easy to use and inexpensive (you can easily do a room for £12) but although it's called 'pure brilliant, it has a matt finish which I found quite flat and I mean by that, it's lacking of light. Depending on the light during the day, the white seems to be pulled towards shade of greys rather than being enhanced by natural light so inexpensive but not
On the contrary, the Pure Brilliant White mat by Crown has a great silky finish on which daylight bounces but Gosh, I almost hang myself out of frustration....It was painful to apply so my favourite choice is the Acrylic Satin Emulsion Paint from the Little Green company.
First, it's environment-friendly which I think is something we should all care about rather than always going for the cheap option (this apply to fashion too) and it has a fantastic finish. A bit more expensive than the other 2 but I think spending £25 to re-do a room is still very reasonable.
Then you can either paint the floorboard in white or sand them.
I'm trying both at home at the moment, mainly because Steve has sanded a room to my request and I can not decently tell him now that I'm going to paint the floorboards without him losing it. So I'm currently bleaching this room to clean the wood and the other one, which has already white painted floorboards will get a new coat of paint (I will let you know which one looks best when I'm done with them).
If you have laminate floors or carpets, well...c'est la vie..No I'm kidding but I guess you will do what I did for years, just wait to be able to find the right house with original floorboards.
Once your canvas is ready, just go easy on the decoration part.
Bedding (sorry I should have mentioned that I was in the bedroom)....go for simple beds rather than one which is going to set the entire mood in the room. I'm in love with the brushed-steel bedframe from Parma Lilac (if you are aware of similar designs without headboards - let me know please) and go for organic, cotton bed linens (pure linen if you can afford to splash).
Muji and the White Company have a great selection of nice duvet covers in organic cotton and beautiful hues of white, soft grey and sand.

Then accessorize...gently...take your time...Add one thing at the time and just wait. Wait for you to feel the room, to really get that less is more.
Personally I think an old, vintage (even rusty and broken) French garden chair looks like a piece of art against a wall white. A bit what Morabito achieves here with this old stool below. When we moved in our house last December, there was a broken garden chair slowly dying on the roof terrace which now looks amazing in the room.
Rather than safely hanging a beautiful print centered above the bed (boring, boring, boring), style the room by hanging it on one side of the bed using your old garden chair as a side table or simply hang ceramic decorations, crosses or something unusual like this reproduction of an XVIII Century stoup and display drawing and B&W family photos in picture frames left on the floor to add to the creative, artistic flair of the room.

Lighting: There is two ways to achieve the Morabito style (well...three).

Either you go for a beautiful French vintage chandelier (see above) and I will try to drag Steve there (antiques, tea & cakes sounds quite good to me) or for a simple bone china pendant light like Kathleen Hills knows how to make.
You can also try to make a pendant light yourself by buying some twisted flex from a DIY shop and create a loop. I also like the look of this beautiful light by Birgit Ostergaard. I have it at home and it really looks beautiful.
Then for the final touches, simply add things you really love and mix contemporary, feminine accessories like these pretty tea-lights with flea-market founds - i.e. an old French metal box or an almond green tea box from Laduree, a gift from my friend Mel which I now use to store spare buttons (don't ask, it's one of these 'mother to daughter' things/habits I inherited).
Hang a beautiful, linen bag on your cupboard to store socks and tights and display a few, stylish bottles to store your body lotion, perfume, etc...

I really enjoy doing this post so I hope you will love it. Have a lovely weekend

BODIE and FOU listed in Bolig's Best Interior Blogs

We were thrilled last night (and a bit slow on the news front since this came out in Feb) to discover that the BODIE and FOU Blog had been listed in Bolig's Best Interior Design blogs along with our favourite blogs and friends: Decor8, Style Files, DoorSixteen, Design*Sponge, Remodelista, Apartment Therapy, Bloesem, Casapinka, Sfgirlbybay, PoppyTalk et Une Cigale a Paris and a few more who we did not know but love already: Nestled In, My Scandinavian Retreat

Quoi? You don't understand Danish?! pfuu bon allez I translate it (very loosely) for you....

"Interior's little black book is how to describe this blog by two French sisters. Elodie and Karine Kong write about what's chic and in right now. In addition, they are fond of food and good hotels and restaurants..."
Nice, isn't it?!

Perfect in every way!

Today, we received a fabulous review from one of our customers who had bought our favourite bag...of course I'm talking about La Tropezienne tote leather bag :-)
If this does not convince you, what will ? :-) and I promise we did not bribe her or anything.

Tunafellows: "I bought this bag with the custom longer handles because I like to be able to put it on my shoulder if I need free hands. Often with bags like that, they feel awkward when you do want to carry them by the handles but not this one. It's the right size and so it doesn't feel awkward in your hands or in the crook of your elbow. It seems slim and yet can carry an amazing amount of bulky things like two bottles of water without becoming unwieldy. I had two compliments the first day including from my husband for whom it usually takes 2-3 weeks to notice anything. "

Keep them coming please!

1 egg, 2 eggs, 3 eggs...Happy Easter

Last year, we were still living in Bristol and were lucky enough to rent a place in Clifton Village in a crescent that had the most fabulous communal garden (not thanks to my gardening skills I reassure you but to the good, dedicated people who lived there) so Mila (below) and her friends had a ball searching for chocolate eggs at Easter.
If I'm really honest, for me Easter is just about eating as many chocolate eggs as I can get away with....but since the egg cube holder by Kathleen Hills is one of our best-sellers, I have a duty...que dis-je?...an obligation to share with you the gorgeous gifts we have for Easter :-)

So let me introduce to my two favourites designs....First the simple yet sublime egg cube by Kathleen Hills....
Now I can hear you saying...why, it's just an egg cube!?....Oh oh oh not so fast! You should now by know that Elodie and I only put beautiful things on our site and this egg cup has nothing to do with cheap and cheerful egg cups you will find in high-street stores.
It's made of quality bone china and produced by a small family-run business in Stoke-on-Trent (the UK mecca of ceramics) and not some factories in China.
It's designed by British Ceramist Kathleen Hills who you may know for her gorgeous pendant lights hanging in fashion shop Whistles and her beyond-stunning Cluster Light.
It's a perfect example of form and function. A practical object to use daily (if you're not watching your cholesterol) but mostly it is something that adds real beauty value to your kitchen and breakfast table. It's simply beautiful.
So here we go....my take on 'this is just an egg cube!'
Now you can get one for yourself or four for your family or to give to someone as a wedding present...it's really up to you but don't fool yourself, it's not "just an egg cup".

The 2nd piece of design I love...very much for the same reasons.... the creative process behind it, the quality of the bone china, the purity of its lines, its practical and decorative values, is the Egg candleholder by Michelle Mason (most renowned for her beautiful, eco-friendly Stella rugs for grown-ups and most recently the Apple and Bunny rugs for children).
We see more and more designers making things complicated, too much bling-bling, too many details and I'm thinking....Just take it easy, make things simple, beautiful...just go back to what matters. Sometimes (often) less is more and that's why I love these Egg candleholders so much

Now I promise next year, we will have some gorgeous chocolates on BODIE and FOU...
Happy Easter

My Design hero...Jacqueline Morabito

We should all have heroes, people who inspire us to be more creative and adventurous, whose life, achievements, talents encourage us to better ourselves and get out of our comfort zone.
When I was growing up in France, my heroes were my sister Elodie, Robert Doisneau, Andy Wharol, Vanessa Paradis, top model Roberta Chirko (do you remember her in the 80s?) and Jacqueline Morabito.
Fastforward 20 years later and now I relate more to the photography of Veronique Vial - and can not recommend enough the sensitive and beautiful portraits of women she took for a book Women before 10 am - the style of Helena Christensen's home, Vanessa's simply perfect choices in cinema and music, my sister forever for being a beautiful person inside/out and Morabito...

Morabito's minimalist almost monastic style at home has always made me feel incredibly calm.
Out of all the interiors she has done, her house in Saint Paul de Vence, a 16th-century sheep barn, located amidst an olive grove and re-designed by her late husband architect Yves Bayard, is my favourite.
Where do I start???
...I'm in total awe with the simple, pure lines of the building and how Bayard has made the surrounding nature, a part of their home.

...I love how Jacqueline mixes simple, contemporary pieces (like the vase from Tse-Tse below) with vintage, baroque accessories such as XVIII century candlesticks or industrial lights,
...I dream of owing one her trademark square coffee and diner tables,
...I admire her work, her creativity and her talent,
...I wish someone from her team would answer the few emails I sent to stock her designs on BODIE and FOU!

Look at the lines and volumes of this bathroom.....not a single ugly pipe in sight!
Just light, water and wood....

Like Jacqueline or maybe because of her, I love crosses too and since we have a few beautiful things on BODIE and FOU that would work for anyone wishing to achieve the Jacqueline Morabito look like this gorgeous ceramic cross or this XVIII Century stoup, I'm going to put together a 'Morabito mood board' for your pleasure.
Bonne nuit!
